Grand Strand and Cape Cod sharing storm patterns
Tuesday’s storm blew through the Carolinas, where we basically dodged a bullet according to at least one expert. The storm quickly headed northwards to the Cape and coastal New England where it caused power failures and flooding. For a brief time Tuesday afternoon, we took cover with all of our pets after our phones went crazy with tornado warning alerts! Thankfully, nothing transpired. We should have done a read on the dogs, because they were sound asleep as we gathered together — a sure sign that there was nothing to be worried about. They have senses we humans can’t even begin to imagine. Another storm is on the way for Friday and Saturday in the same locations. Hunker down and stay safe!
How’s yer heart?
February is heart disease awareness month or something like that. I remember this because of Valentine’s Day. Well, I just got back, this minute, from my annual cardiology appointment. With my family history, I need to do this every year. But I’m healthy as a horse, thank God. They always do a double-take when they look at the medications section on my chart. “Only vitamins?” they remark. “No other medications?” “Nope, none.” I proudly say. I am lucky. My father died at 69 from heart disease, his father died in his 50s or 60s (I never met him :( ) and my eldest sibling died at age 62 from heart-related complications. Interesting fact: my dad was one of the pioneer patients of the famous Framingham Heart Study. Did you know? Cholesterol issues are, for the most part, genetic. My doctor said for me to watch my cholesterol because of the family issues. I told him I’m a vegetarian. He said it doesn’t matter, it’s genetic. Who knew?! You can never be too careful about family health issues. Get yours in order. It doesn’t hurt to get checked out once a year.
Missing one year today
My favorite restaurant server, Brittany Tee, has been missing exactly a year today. The 35-year-old more or less disappeared from the Brookfields area in central Massachusetts on January 10, 2022. Brittany is a delightful, happy-go-lucky person who adores her family and, in my personal opinion, would never deliberately leave without a word. Someone has to know something. But, to date, nothing has transpired. The Worcester County DA, Joseph Early issued a new statement along with the Brookfield PD yesterday. The organizations announced that the search for Brittany has not ended, and ground searches have resumed as of last month. Strange birds on the Grand Strand
I’ve never heard of a dovekie before, and I had to look it up… It’s an teeny-tiny arctic bird that normally lives on rocky islands within glaciers. Several dovekies have been found here in Myrtle Beach and along the Carolina coast recently, most likely due to storm activity, and wildlife centers have put out a message regarding how to handle these ocean-going birds, if found. For starters, they shouldn’t be put back into the ocean waters. They should be placed in a box and kept warm, dark and quiet. Once that’s done, a wildlife organization such as Carolina Wildlife Rehab Center should be contacted asap. CWRC says the chances are poor that the little sea birds will survive but they are willing to work with them. Here’s a write-up with all the information on these tiny sea birds.
