Another Wild Weather Sunday - Grand Strand Headlines, December 16, 2023
Closures announced ahead of "tropical nor'easter" !
Hello Grand Strand Followers!
As always, I want to thank you for reading and following along. I can’t express how much I appreciate you! While the content here is free to all, a paid subscription would help cover me for time spent on my work, as well as care of my four elderly pets! So, think it over and maybe upgrade to paid. And if you don’t, that’s ok, too!
Let’s get to it then, shall we?
Get ready for Sunday storm 2
Local forecasters are calling for another whopper of a storm this Sunday — possibly worse than last Sunday’s storm which was mainly wind and rain. They’re saying we could get 3 inches of rain during the day on Sunday, and it’ll basically be such a washout that some holiday light displays are going dark until the storm passes and cleanup ensues.
A wind advisory, coastal flood watch, high surf advisory and a small craft advisory have been issued for our area starting Sunday morning at 6 a.m. and lasting all day into the evening hours. There is speculation that there could be record-breaking rainfall amounts.
Hurricane season ended on November 30th, and we didn’t really get any bad storms, but now we’re expecting what meteorologists are calling a tropical storm, or even a (very warm) nor’easter!
Storm prediction causes light displays to close
Operators of Winter Wonderland at the Beach and The Great Christmas Light Show have announced that they are closing temporarily this weekend due to the forecasted storm.
The Great Christmas Light Show is planning to re-open on Monday. The Winter Wonderland at the Beach folks estimate they will re-open mid-week.
A few other closures and schedule changes are listed in this article.
Be ready for coastal flooding
In the usual areas of Cherry Grove and Garden City, as well as perhaps elsewhere, weather folks are telling Grand Strand businesses and residents to prepare for flooding along the coast.
My pic of the week
Farewell, Meals on Wheels (but hopefully not forever)
Meals on Wheels of Horry and Georgetown county has suspended service. The organization provided its last delivery of meals on Friday, December 15. At a time when the Myrtle Beach area is growing faster than most places in the U.S., and that growth is mainly from retirees relocating here, an organization like Meals on Wheels is crucial.
During its final day of operation (temporarily!) there were lots of tears and prayers. The organization is searching for a new location.
Inlet Square Mall says goodbye to The Different Drum
As a drummer who used to live right around the corner from the Inlet Square Mall, this story touched my heart. The Different Drum is having a celebration today (December 16) from 2 - 5 p.m. to celebrate its move to Surfside Beach ahead of the permanent closure of Inlet Square Mall. Santa will be there for the kids! Check it out!
Plane that crashed near Asheville, NC departed from MYR
A single-engine plane that crashed Thursday night on its way to Asheville, North Carolina with two people on board originally departed from Myrtle Beach International Airport earlier in the day before making a stop in Knoxville, Tennessee. The pilot and one passenger were transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
